Writing on the Walls

Creative Friends

Art is like writing on the walls. How many times have you looked at a piece of art, or a photograph, and tried to imagine what was happening in the lives of the people portrayed? Or what has taken place in a certain city photo or street view? These are just two of multitude of possible scenarios.

For the writers among my viewers, how many times have you seen a piece of art that was nonsensical, maybe cubism or even Dali-like and thought it would make a great book cover?

Perhaps a picture reminded you of a song. Would you then consider writing song lyrics?

For me, a thriller writer, a photo of a lethal injection chamber interior in a prison triggered my emotions. I couldn’t imagine a human being facing that process. Soon after seeing that picture, I had the plot for a new story – from seeing only one picture. It is my soon-to-be-released thriller, Down to the Needle. That book is due out in Jan/Feb. 2010.

For the result of arousing emotions, art as picture prompts make great story starters. Art has the capability of putting us in touch with forgotten feelings and memories. I’ve even thought about using some of my photographs as story starters in some of my contests here on this site. Using picture prompts produces some amazing plots.

With art in all its many forms available to the writing world, I’ve decided to incorporate this artists’ section into my writing world. I am, after all, now oil painting and offering my photographs and art for sale in my gallery: Mary Deal Fine Art.

Photography Prints

A NOTE: My photos and paintings are available as giclee prints on canvas, framed or unframed, posters (all in many sizes) and greeting cards. When purchasing my photos as greetings cards, you are allowed to add any type message you wish in the cards. That's exciting!

Writing will always be my first love. Yet, as I branch out into art and photography, I’ve come across some superior artists, songwriters and other creatives that I wish to promote.

You’ll find them on Book Cover Art.

For the writer or artist in you, the people you’ll find on the book cover art page are a mix creative friends and artists working at their craft as diligently as any writer. Others fit into the writing arena with their songwriting and lyrics. One friend’s career choice is creating fantasy book covers and art, and… wow!

So enjoy! And remember: If you’re feeling creative in whatever sense, you’ve heard the saying that something is like writing on the walls? Perhaps, since you are prompted to express the talent that’s always been with you, that, too, is like writing on the walls.
